Pastor Derek is always willing to provide a Service of Dedication
for babies and young children. This is tailored according to the
parent’s understanding of the Christian faith and is a formal
acknowledgement that children are a gift from God, and that the parents
are willing to allow the child access to Christian teaching. It enables
parents and family members unfamiliar with church life to take part
in a formal naming ceremony, yet do so in a relaxed atmosphere to
which they can easily invite family and friends. We encourage family
members or friends willing to take responsibility for the spiritual
welfare of the child to become God-parents and actively participate
in the Service.
Chellow Christian Fellowship offers this Service of Dedication rather than a Christening Service or Child Baptism Service. We believe that baptism itself is an outward acknowledgement, before God and the people, that an inner work of God's grace has taken place in a person's life following their acceptance of Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour. This clearly requires the person to fully understand for themselves what has happened to them and be able to explain this to others. It is therefore only made available to believing adults.
We also offer a simple service of blessing, which recognises that every child is a gift from God. This service can include the formal naming of a child too, and is ideal for those parents who want to say thank you to God for their child but don't feel able to be involved in a Service of Dedication.
